Clean-up and rehabilitation efforts in flood-hit Hat Yai have been expanded, with authorities deploying additional workers and machinery to meet the government’s 14-day restoration target.
Authorities continued to disburse compensation payments to flood victims nationwide as floods continued in 14 provinces, with water levels reportedly receding.
As of Monday morning, 49.7% of operations in Hat Yai district had been completed, with 3,177 workers and 483 machines on duty, Deputy Interior Minister Sakda Vicheansil said during an online meeting with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.
“To meet the government target, we have increased manpower as well as heavy and light machinery,” Mr Sakda said. “Working hours have also been extended, which will double the amount of debris transported to the Saphan Dam site.”
Additional rounds of debris transfer have been scheduled to prevent waste accumulation.
Medical supplies and medicines to prevent flood-related illnesses — including leptospirosis (Weil’s disease) — have been distributed to residents. Hat Yai Hospital had restored at least 80% of its functions as of Monday, Public Health Ministry spokesman Ekachai Piensriwatchara said, adding that 10 medical teams are being dispatched daily to assist affected communities through Friday.
The Government Savings Bank has so far transferred more than 6.3 billion baht in compensation to flood-affected households. Payments have been made in Nakhon Pathom, Nakhon Sawan, Suphan Buri, Songkhla, Trang, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Narathiwat, Pattani, Phatthalung, Yala, Satun and Surat Thani.
